ACTION ALERT. It is important for RDs to voice their concerns to higher-ups at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
If you are displeased and unhappy with McDonald’s status as a “gold sponsor” at this month’s annual California Dietetic Association meeting, we highly recommend sending an email to the group’s central email address (PatSmith@dietitian.org) and cc:ing President Michelle Wien, DrPH, RD, CDE (President@dietitian.org)
A suggested message follows:
“As a Registered Dietitian, I would like to let the California Dietetic Association executive board know how disappointed and disturbed I am by McDonald’s status as a “gold sponsor” at this month’s annual conference.
These sorts of partnerships do not benefit our profession, and only give companies that are notorious for unhealthy foods and unsavory business practices a much-undeserved reputation as champions of health. We should not provide opportunities for the likes of McDonald’s to co-opt our profession and usurp our messaging.
It is precisely these sorts of partnerships that diminish our hard-earned credential in the eyes of other health professionals and the general public.
I urge the California Dietetic Association’s leaders to keep this in mind when planning future events, and align themselves with sponsors that truly reflect the mission of our organization, which is to improve our nation’s health and advance the profession of dietetics through research, education and advocacy. Our profession deserves better.
