This 2012 USA Today interview with Katie Bayne, Coca-Cola’s president of sparkling beverages in North America, speaks volumes about Big Soda’s true motives.
Note the toothless “all foods fit” messaging (the same antiquated one still trotted out by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and presented as “science-based”), the misrepresentation of their products (soda = carbs = energy = “a pick me up”), and the outright denialism of science.
In short, this interview can be summed up as Coca-Cola not caring about public health. And that’s their right, of course. The problem is that this is the same company educating dietitians, partnering with the Academy, and claiming to “promote the Registered Dietitian”.
