Dr. Marion Nestle presents this brief summary of some of the latest ways the food industry tries to present itself as a champion of health and wellness.
Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics partner Coca-Cola, for example, made these promises “to beat obesity”. Dr. Nestle’s comments are in the accompanying brackets:
“1) Offer low- or no-calorie drinks in every market [but focus advertising on the sugary ones].
2) Provide transparent nutrition information, listing calories on the front of all packages [but per serving, not total for the big ones]
3) Help get people moving [divert attention from the caloric effects of sodas]
4) Market responsibly, including no advertising to children under 12 anywhere in the world [I will believe it when I see it]”
The sad part? The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics not only buys these ‘promises’ hook, line, and sinker but goes one step further and actively defends Coca-Cola in the public sphere. We hope that changes soon.
