Sugar is — rightfully! — increasingly coming under fire from the scientific community. And, as is to be expected, the food industry is feeling threatened and lashing out. Their retorts are not particularly surprising: referring to reputable studies in prestigious medical journals as “junk science,” and claiming that soda and sugar are unfairly targeted.
In fact, Coca-Cola’s Beverage Institute (an Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics sponsor) is one of the organizations leading the charge on how sugar-sweetened beverages are in no way problematic from a health standpoint.
Of course, industry’s attack on health advocates are nothing new. Two articles we want to share:
1) This “sugar spin” timeline from Mother Jones.
2) This lengthy and fascinating piece in The New Yorker on how Big Ag consistently undermined & discredited a researcher who exposed the risks of atrazine.
Disturbing tactics, no matter how often they are employed.
