Brief professional bio:
Melinda Hemmelgarn, M.S., R.D., is a Registered Dietitian and “investigative nutritionist” with 30+ years experience in clinical, academic, and public health nutrition. An award-winning journalist, and host of nationally syndicated, Food Sleuth Radio, Melinda connects the dots between food, health and agriculture and helps us “think beyond our plates.” She promotes “food system literacy” by applying critical thinking skills to media messages about food and farming.
What does ‘professional integrity’ mean to you?
It means doing investigative work to find “food truth.” It means speaking out against exploitation in the food system, and speaking up for up for the health of patients/consumers and clients. And of course, always backing up my words.
What words of encouragement do you have for RDs-to-be looking to make a significant contribution to our profession?
Think critically. Ask questions. Connect the dots. For example: Ask who owns and profits from the messages dished out about food and agriculture. Think about where our food comes from and the conditions under which it was produced. Connect the dots between how a food is produced and its nutritional quality, and the importance of soil and water quality in public health. Nutrition is so much more than nutrients on a plate. Love your work and take pride in being a dietitian.
Again, we extend our congratulations to Melinda and thank her for her important work and for representing the RD credential in a forward-thinking manner.
