In what can best be described as a logic-defying move, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has, as part of a three-year collaboration with Kraft, put its first-ever nutrition seal on packages of Kraft Singles.
While the Academy claims this is not an endorsement, Kraft told Stephanie Strom of the New York Times this was “the first time the Academy was endorsing a product.”
In a video message to its members, Academy President Sonja Connor describes this collaboration as a “wonderful opportunity” and claims this is a way to “help improve eating patterns for American families”:
How the Academy believes Americans will see dietitians as “the most trusted experts in food and nutrition” with these sorts of partnerships befuddles us.
PS: An Academy House of Delegates meeting is scheduled for May, and the issue of corporate sponsorship is on the agenda. We will share more details tomorrow, including an email directory of state and DPG delegates as well as a sample letter you can email to your HOD delegates to voice your concerns on the topic of corporate sponsorships and this latest development.
