The illustrious Dr. Marion Nestle continues collecting industry-funded studies with sponsor-favorable results. One year in, and the score is 145 to 12. Wow!
The latest collection of five studies features the dairy industry, the North American Meat Institute, and a defense of added-sugar penned by a nutrition professor who has recieved grants from General Mills, Kellogg, and the International Life Science Institute (ILSI, a lobby ground funded partly by Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and Nestlé.
And, keep in mind last week’s Vox article on conflicts of interest in nutrition research, specifically this quote from Dr. Nestle:
“It’s not the quality of the science that’s at issue. The studies are carried out according to strong scientific principles. But the bias seems to come in around the research question that’s asked, the interpretation of the results, putting a positive spin on findings even when the results are neutral.” That’s not good for science or for public health.”
