Today’s big news? The official announcement of the new Nutrition Facts Panel.
Hands down, the most significant public health victory here is the inclusion of added sugars. You may recall that, for the past two years, the food industry — with the help of its many front groups — balked at this recommendation, citing an absence of science.
Industry stuck to its guns, completely ignoring consensus on recommended added sugar limits from reputable organizations like the World Health Organization and the American Heart Association.
However, FDA explicitly states: “Scientific data shows that it is difficult to meet nutrient needs while staying within calorie limits if you consume more than 10 percent of your total daily calories from added sugar, and this is consistent with the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.”
